I don't know what you are using, but the following editors can certainly handle more than 2000 characters:

OpenSource and free:
http://www.pnotepad.org
http://www.pspad.com
http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net

Commercial (but not expensive)
http://www.textpad.com

I have edited files with more than 10000 characters per line in PNotepad, PSPad and Textpad
