... I'd like to claim a patch or two, unfortunately I'm very strapped
for time at the moment and while I can probably cobble together
enough moments I don't feel able to commit to a five-day deadline
(and risk "blocking" a patch from someone better able to review it).

So, I have informally claimed myself one of the more obscure patches
which takes my fancy; *if* I get to the point where I am confident
I can complete the review, I'll claim it; if not nobody will be the wiser.
If someone else claims it in the meantime, it won't be an problem for
me as I will still have learnt something from the review process.

I won't mention which patch I'm looking at, as we'd be teetering in the
direction of a nebulous "semi-claimed" status which helps no-one.

Does that make some kind of sense?

Yes, it does. If you do post a review, please make sure that you put
your name under "reviewers", so that you get credit for having done it.
