Hi,

My name is Luis Contreras, I'm from Dominican Republic, actually there are
many users on PostgreSQL in my country. I have about 8 years working with
Unix/Linux Enviroments and 2 years working with PostgreSQL. I would like to
know if I could arrange a PGDay for the Caribbean area or for Dominican
Republic only, I have contact with the principals universities in my country
and at the same time I know a lot of Unix/Linux users.

Please send information about what I need in order to arrange an event like
this.

Thanks a lot

Be sure to tell the guys in the spanish lists, pgsql-es-ayuda and
pgsql-es-fomento. We have at least one high profile member in Dominican
Republic. Oh, and there was talk about setting up a Latin American
PGDay of sorts, next year in Colombia and in Cuba in 2011, I think.

There is a possibility to add some spanish branchs in PgCon BR next year (or
LatinoWare).
It was really awesome the experience in Br (in fact, our talk was in spanish and
was understable for portugues speakers).

I told this because Br talk levels was really interesting for
experienced professionals.

Might I suggest doing a general Carribean PGDay?

The folks in Cuba really want to hold a PGDay, but we can't send an
American PostgreSQL Hacker to speak if they did. If the PGDay in the DR
was for the whole Carribean, including Cuba, both Cubans and Americans
could go. And they might, especially if you hold it in the winter ...

Well, I was thinking to arrange it for local only, because it would be the
first time, and now I'm sending messages and contacting postgresql users in
order for the next month to give some conferences in some universities in
DR, so I could detect postgresql users that later I could use as support in
activities ahead.

If you could give some suggestions about it, just let me know,

Thanks a lot

Might I suggest doing a general Carribean PGDay?

The folks in Cuba really want to hold a PGDay, but we can't send an
American PostgreSQL Hacker to speak if they did. If the PGDay in the DR
was for the whole Carribean, including Cuba, both Cubans and Americans
could go. And they might, especially if you hold it in the winter ...

There are one or two hackers outside of the US who could speak without
your gubberment getting all hot and bothered :-)

Yep. That will be our solution if there is a PGDay in Cuba.

The guide helps. Once you have a schedule, let us know what you need
for materials, and we'll try to book a speaker from abroad to speak.

Hi Mr. Berkus

The main goal of preparing an event like this is to strength the postgresql
community in Dominican Republic, to indetify entities interesting in
PostgreSQL Solutions, at the same time actually I'm writing a book in
Spanish oriented to DBA works, I hope to have it ready on may 2010, I'm the
CIO of a little company called Cube Plus Linux, you can visit us at
www.cubepluslinux.com , Is there a way in becoming a Postgresql
Certification Center for the Caribbean?, I want to give support to the
postgresql project in my country for that reason I wanna begin with this
little event, and in a future to become a postgresql sponsor.

If you could give me any orientation, it'd be great

Thanks a lot for the support

Yeah, I see your listing ... will approve as soon as I check the links.

We don't *have* certifications for postgresql.org, as far as I know.
You can talk to EnterpriseDB and Open Technology Group; I believe that
they both do certifications.

I don't think that is true. I was invited to speak in Cuba two years
ago but had a schedule conflict, but I did research at that time and
found that US citizens can attend professional conferences in Cuba:

http://www.treas.gov/offices/enforcement/ofac/programs/ascii/cuba.txt

2. Professional meetings organized by an international professional
organization

Full-time professionals are authorized to engage in Cuba travel-related
transactions to attend professional meetings or conferences in Cuba
pursuant to section 515.564(a)(2) of the Regulations, provided that (1)
the meeting or conference is organized by an international professional
organization, institution, or association that regularly sponsors
meetings or conferences in other countries; (2) the organization,
institution, or association sponsoring the meeting or conference is not
headquartered in the United States unless it has been specifically
licensed to sponsor the meeting; (3) the purpose of the meeting or
conference is not the promotion of tourism in Cuba or other commercial
activities involving Cuba that are inconsistent with the Regulations;
and (4) the meeting or conference is not intended primarily to foster
production of any biotechnological products.

In fact, US citizens don't need any special permission to go --- they
just need to have documents proving they have followed the law if asked
later. There are only a few flights from the US to Cuba --- one is from
New York City.

I would be glad to speak in Cuba if asked.

That might well be true -- however, the funds held by SPI Inc. on the
behalf of PostgreSQL cannot be used to refund the travel expenses, which
is what I think Josh is alluding to.

(I know this very well because I'm travelling there later this month to
teach a PG week-long course, and our liaison told me it was no use
applying for a refund due to US govt. limitations. So I have to pay for
the expenses out of my own pocket.)

Uh, I actually don't see any mention in the government document about
funding issues. My _guess_ is that the flight can be funded from the
USA, but not the payments in Cuba, like the hotel, but I never got far
enough to researching funding details.

Really? Then I'll be contacting our SPI liaison. The Cuba guys are
taking care of the lodging and such, so that's not a problem for me, but
the airplane fares are a different story.

SPI or pgUS would need to talk to attorneys about that.
