I am thinking perhaps we could update the 8.0 now available box to announce
the 8.1 beta release. Does anyone feel strongly against that idea? Does
anyone have any artwork they would like to suggest to be put into the box?

Good idea, but do people who are using the beta know to report things on
hackers?

Presumably the "whats new in 8.0" link will be replaced with a link to
"Participate in the Beta Program" which would probably point to
http://www.postgresql.org/developer/beta. On that page we can put up in
big flashing letters "Please report all bugs/problems to the
pgsql-hackers(at)postgresql mailing list"

Um, shouldn't they report to pgsql-bugs(at)postgresql(dot)org, or use the webform?
We don't exactly want a bunch of "I can't connect to the database" appearing
on -hackers.

Yes, they can use bugs, but they should also be subscribed to hackers so
they can get information about changes.

Ok, I've done a quick mock up at http://xzilla.postgresql.org/, which links to
a revised http://xzilla.postgresql.org/developer/beta.

If people are ok with the general scheme, I'll go about updating the links as
needed and encorporating any word changes by those who know better what kind
of action we should be suggesting

I don't agree with this, mainly because it will limit the # willing to do
beta testing if it requires getting inundated with yet another list ... we
should be encouraging ppl to download and report bugs, not trying to limit
them :(

Another then that -hackers should be removed, the rest looks good ...

Can you please replace the feature image on the homepage with this one
I've designed?

http://www.emilyboyd.com/design/postgresql/feature_gears.png

It should end up looking something like this:

http://www.emilyboyd.com/design/postgresql/screenshot_homepage_beta.png

Thanks!

Emily

That imagine looks a lot better. It occured to me that a rusty cog might
not be the best image to associate with postgres.

Can we get the font you used in the header, or the original PSD?
There are several community related sites like the PostgreSQL
Foundation site who use the same design concept but without matching
fonts.

Gavin

Emily's gears look good to me too. One other trivial gripe: "next
version of it's software" should be "next version of its software".
(My recollection from grade school is that "it's" is an abbreviation
for "it is", which does not fit here.) Or maybe you could make it
a little less impersonal by talking about "our software".

Gavin,

I didn't actually use a font for the logo, as I just grabbed the
Illustrator file from here:

http://www.pgsql.com/graphics/Empowered_logos/

If you need to change the logo text, I *think* the font used is Strait.
I've uploaded a copy here:

http://www.emilyboyd.com/design/postgresql/strait.ttf

The font used for the text on the right is Frutiger Roman. (You'll need
to source your own copy of this, as it's not a free font.)

In case it helps, there's a layered PNG of the entire header here:

http://www.emilyboyd.com/design/postgresql/header.png

Emily

I was trying to convince Robert of that very thing yesterday! I'd like to

It's a beta release, it's not suppose to be polished yet :-P
