Re: [pgsql-advocacy] Setting up for Press Contacts in SEAsia

We're interested in moving forward evangelizing PostgreSQL to SEAsia -
primarily Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia and are prepared to
start translating and distributing (when appropriate) press releases to
local media. Would we like to translate the current version release on the
website ( http://www.postgresql.org/about/press/presskit82.html.en ) into
Thai or just do the 8.3 cvs release (

Thai is quickest for us as it takes a little longer to pass around the
Chinese, Malay, and Indonesian versions for proof-reading but we can do
those as well. All of these countries have local language technical
publications that will be very interested in publishing this content for us.

Also I notice that all the published press contacts have
postgresql.orgemails and web sites. How do we get that set up?

I think the 8.3 versions are enough, since we will probably release within the
next couple weeks.

Yep. Might as well try and do them all, but no need to wait untill they are
all done to start shipping back the content for the website.

Marc can set those up for you. Note we already have a chinese press contact,
you might want to drop him a line to see if you can coordinate. For Thai,
Malay, and Indonesia, I guess those would be th@, my@, and id@ right? Which
email(emails?) should those forward to?

Regarding Chinese, do we distinguish between language and region? I noticed
the link to the Chinese translation of the 8.2 press release is missing. But
if someone else normally does that all the better - we can re-use it. But my
interest is in contacting the Singapore and Malaysian/Chinese technical
media with these releases. So we need to add sg@ for Singapore unless we
have someone else there already.

You should translate the stuff in the cvs folder called "Translate".
Once I get back to California I can run you through the rest of the
stuff to be a Regional Contact.

Robert,

Please do not field requests to add or change things in the Regional
contacts, nor to give people @postgresql.org addresses for this
purpose. There's an entire system behind the PR release and it's
important that you not assign random people I don't know about who then
won't get the correct information or notices.

Think of it as me going in an committing all kinds of changes to web
CVS without even talking to you or Magnus, including ones which broke
things. You're doing the same to me.

If someone volunteers to be a press contact, as Benjamin has done, I'll
take care of it. Forward it to me if you don't think I saw it, unless
you know that I'm actually disabled.

If that's too much "bus factor" for you, then I need to get someone up
to date in the *entire* routine, which is *not* just the web site. I
think Magnus would be good at it, if he has time?

The only argument I can think of is timezone :)

That said, I'm not sure I want to take on taht... But I don't really know
what's involved, so I can't say for sure. If it's a lot of work, then I'll
pass - I have plenty enough in that general area on my plate already.

That was what I was thinking of. I've tapped Magnus in the past to do
some of the release stuff due to being able to start it on European time.

Since they're all going to one person, I'd rather have a single e-mail
box for them -- Benjamin doesn't need to clean out 3 mailboxes from
spam. Maybe seasia(at)postgresql(dot)org?

I wonder if the cultural and language differences between the above areas
might cause future problems with a single email? Or if this might be a
problem for say, future Malay volunteers, who want to help Benjamin with
thier local area only?

Hmmm, yeah. South East Asia is a pretty big swatch of land and water. I
agree that getting a bunch of different emails is probably not a good
idea either. What if we just have an alias for his primary area and
point the other regionals to him until the community shows more
volunteers? Ala,

South East Asia:

Thailand - foo(at)postgresql(dot)org
Malay - foo(at)postgresql(dot)org

etc..

Then when a particular region crops up with community we can just
change the primary contact instead of having a global.

+1 on that. I do anticipate that it will be useful to have individual email
boxes eventually (hopefully because our advocacy is working) and will need
individuals to handle each nation/language space but a single goto for now
is perfectly adequate.
