Re: Ohio LinuxFest 2007 CFS

Ohio LinuxFest 2007 will be held Friday, September 28 through Sunday,
September 30 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Most
presentations will take place on Saturday. The audience will consist
of a wide range of Linux community members, including devoted end
users, independent developers, small systems integrators, as well as
IT architects and engineers. Organizers are seeking approximately 20
speakers to address community-related technology and/or topics of
interest. Each presenter will be allowed 45 minutes. Organizers will
provide A/V equipment.

It's worth putting this onto the schedule of "things that probably
ought to get prepared for"; note that they intend to close the call
July 15th.

In principle, I could go again, and do "what's up with 8.3?" We might
have an idea of what the list of new features is by then :-).

It seemed a bit small and localized, but otherwise definitely worth
having a presence there. I'd been meaning to ask if you were intending
to come back this time around. Last year's talk did spark some interest
from the crowd, and so perhaps another round of What's New is in order.

Had pondered putting together a "proprietary to PostgreSQL migration"
talk myself. Of course not being too familiar with parts of some
processes could lead to a little trouble, but I suppose there's still
some time to figure that out. ;)

I would love to go to this too, but Sun's unlikely to spring for it even if
they are a sponsor. However, you're not much closer than me, are you?

I _will_ be there, and I'm contemplating putting together a talk about
HA web apps with Postgres on the backend. I'll struggle through some of
the details and send a proposal in this weekend.

Yes, I am materially closer. It's drivable, albeit a long day of
driving; last year, I flew, which was definitely nicer :-).

Probably so.

The one reason I'd selfishly think of to speak, myself, is that I'd
kind of like to catch the event, and it is far enough that I would
have a hard time justifying (to myself :-)) going if I'm not speaking.

Of course, that's not necessarily a good enough reason for everyone
else :-).

Unfortunately I don't have enough in-depth experience (yet) related to PG
to give a PG-specific talk.

Having said that, I worked on an article for LinuxJournal last year
regarding "The complete OSS small business environment". It didn't get
finished because the CRM app wasn't mature enough; however, now it is.
This is related because I had planned to use triggers in PG to migrate
data in real-time between the accounting and CRM apps.

I don't know if I'll have enough time this summer to put together a talk
on the subject, but I'll consider doing so.

Perhaps you could give a talk there (or someone could anywhere!)
about the "gotchas" involved in picking up Postgres. I know that
some things are probably now "obvious" to me that one time threw me
for a loop. I just don't know what they are any more. :) Someone
talking about that with fresh eyes might be helpful to the community.

Any chance you guys could coordinate on running a PostgreSQL booth? AIUI .org
sponsorship is available for ~$75 which also gets us booth space. I think SPI
could probably pick up the tab on that, and we could send flyers and CD's as
well. Assuming Chris or anyone else shows up (there's an outside chance I'll
make it, its a 6.5 hour drive) you'd have some extra staffers to help, but I
think we need someone local to get the ball rolling.

I'm willing to help. I don't want to spend all of my time staffing a
booth, however, so I'm only interested if there are enough other folks
helping out to ensure that I'll have time to see some of the talks.

I think about 4 people is a good number.

Alternately, if you have 3 commitments, then why not assume you're doing a
booth and solicit volunteers on both pgsql-general and PWN? I'd be
surprised if you can't pick up at least 2 more people.

Both Sun and FreeBSD (split with NetBSD) at least had booths last year.
