Re: Changing mailling list server

(This is a repost of a mail from Martín Marqués a couple of days ago --
did anyone see it in -advocacy?)

Dear Advocacy members (and Marc ;-)):

We, at the Spanish PostgreSQL mailling list hosted at
pgsql-ayuda(at)tlali(dot)iztacala(dot)unam(dot)mx are having some problems due to lack
of administration in the list, and at the moment are debating about what
(or where) to do with the list.

One of the solutions that came upon was to migrate (pass) the mailling
list to postgresql.org (pgsql-ayuda(at)postgresql(dot)org) and so I would like
to know which is the policy about this, and if there is a chance of
hosting the list at pgsql-ayuda(at)postgresql(dot)org (maybe it should be
called pgsql-es-ayuda or just pgsql-es, to follow the convention?)

Please note that we would take care of whatever administrative tasks are
required.

definitely doable ... once a decision was made, just let me konw and I can
get it setup ... I also need to know who would be listed as the list
owner, for moderation purposes, as I can't read Spanish *yet* (next years
project)

Ya hablé con él y no tiene inconveniente en entregar los archivos de la
lista.

longeva lista de pgsql en la historia, ¿no?

Pues ya, abrimos aquella y tan pronto como este corriendo migramos y
le pedimos a quien quiera que sea que cierre la de iztacala; o ¿me
estoy perdiendo de algo?.

Solo nos faltaría ver si vamos a compartir la admin de la lista aunque
creo que Alvaro ya los anoto a el y a ti, suficiente para empezar.

Entonces el plan sería:

1.- Responderle a Marc y decirle que abra la lista con Alvaro y tu
como admins (incluyanme a mi si lo consideran necesario)

2.- Hacer una migración de todos los usuarios, ie, solicitarle al
admin de iztacala los usuarios y meterla en la nueva lista, hace
millones de años que no uso majordomo (que es lo que parecen estar
usando en postgreSQL.org) pero no debe de ser difícil.

3.- Cerrar la lista de iztacala y actualizar las páginas, en
principio http://www.postgresql.org/lists.html pero no sé si haya
más referencias por ahí.

4.- Mandar un correo de bienvenida y de explicación.

5.- Ver la posiblilidad de migrar los archivos.

6.- Mantener el buen ritmo de trabajo y ayuda.

Right ... ahora me surgio la duda de si queremos continuar con
exactamente el mismo nombre pgsql-ayuda. Por ej. existen listas en
aleman y en frances, pgsql-de-allgemein y pgsql-fr-generale

Pienso que podriamos llamarnos pgsql-es-ayuda, me gustaria contar con la
aprobacion al menos de Uds. y de Roberto Andrade, nuestro owner
ad honorem.

Ya tengo la lista de usuarios, y cuando tengamos la lista arriba voy a
tener los archivos de esta para tratar de insertarlos en la nueva.

No hay problema: Fue en 1996, cuando era jefe de informática de una de
las escuelas de mi apreciada UNAM. Y sí, tengo 53 bien vividos años.

No estoy tan seguro. Mira en archives.postgresql.org, la columna de la
izquierda, donde estan las "regional lists".

"es" es la abreviatura estandar para el idioma español (o castellano,
como quieras llamarlo), del estandar ISO 639. Por ej. los nombres de
las configuraciones locales usan esos codigos.

Faltaria que la gente de iztacala modifique los alias de su postfix para que
en lugar de ir con la pipe de mailman vayan a parar a la nueva direccion de
la lista.

archives.postgresql.org is not right about this list. In fact it
doesn't work, and I can't get to the archives. (It only shows the list
on the first search dropdown, but even that doesn't work).

Sorry, I was talking about pgsql-es-ayuda, a spanish list which was not
on archives (nor anywhere else). It's up now thanks to Marc, you can
see it under "Regional Lists" at the left.

BTW, I note that the spanish list has a lot more traffic than the german
and french one. Maybe it's because Postgres is heavily used on Latin
America, but maybe it's just because not a lot of people speak english,
compared to european types. (Maybe this is related to the fact that
there are spanish and brazilian portuguese versions of General Bits but
no other language.)
