Where are the Server error logs

Hi

when i try to use psql i get message

bash-2.01# /opt/sfmdb/pgsql/bin/psql -U sfmdb
psql: FATAL: missing or erroneous pg_hba.conf file
HINT: See server log for details.

where can the server log files be found. if i need to set some parameter in which file do i do that.
