Installation problems

Hello,I'm going through the elongated instructions of installing pgsql and am stuck at the point where one types:
%> su - postgresWhen I type this and type in the password I chose, I get the following error: 'su: no directory'
Anybody know how I fix this? I've Googled and came up with nothing.
