Selena,

Congratulations!

PSU was also selected as a mentor organization. We'll be spiffing up our own projects page, adding some projects to enable Postgresql to be used more easily as a teaching tool.

RSN we'll be soliciting student participation in the SOC and we will be sure to highlight the PostgreSQL projects page as well as our own.

On a related note, a patch generated by two PSU students (Tom Raney, Shreya Bhargava) last summer was just applied to 8.4 ( http://archives.postgresql.org/pgsql-patches/2008-03/msg00209.php ). It enables the hash index, long deprecated because of unacceptable build times, to be usable. I'm sure PDXPUG joins me in congratulating them.

All the best,

Len

[ Psst: PSU folks -- talking to you! ]

Here's an earlier announcement:

Google Summer of Code 2008 is starting now. We need to get our projects page
up to date:
http://www.postgresql.org/developer/summerofcode

We also need PostgreSQL contributors to volunteer as mentors. As well as the
core code, *any* project in the PostgreSQL "family" is eligible, including
drivers, GUIs, documentation, replication, applications and tools. Don't be
shy!

Mentors must be patient, friendly, easy to stay in touch with, knowledgeable
about their project areas, and able to commit to spending several hours a
week helping their student(s) from May to August.

GSOC is an unparalled opportunity for our project to recruit new contributors,
and get students interested in databases. We have one week to get everything
together. So please respond soon!
